Firms will 'pitch' to students
TOO many young people are leaving the Forest of Dean to find work, say businesses bosses.
They will give "reverse Dragons' Den" style pitches this week to persuade them to start their careers locally, as plans to keep A-level students in the Dean too were also revealed.
Gloucestershire College is joining forces with Dene Magna School in a bid to build a new sixth form.
Now local group Forest Inspiration has launched an initiative to try and help as well.

It is hosting a careers fair on Thursday.
Held at Vantage Point Conference Centre in Mitcheldean, it will be attended by more than 30 local companies, including The Warranty Group and Simplicity, along with organisations such as JobCentre Plus, Tesco Lydney, Gloucestershire College and the National Careers Service.
The fair will have a noon to 4pm slot focusing on job seekers and school age prospects. That is followed by a 5pm to 7pm slot providing the chance for people who travel outside of the area for work to find out more about careers within the local area.

“Hopefully this won't be used as a market for cheap labour, where students are offered "internships" on a vague promise of employment, but end up being paid the minmum wage (or nothing at all) and being released at the end of it without having gained any useful experience.”

“Can you blame them... Where are the new career jobs being created?
All we seem to hear about is new Asda's and Tesco's being built, not every young person wants to work for £6.50 - £7 an hour in a supermarket!”

“Nothing wrong with young people trying out different locations before settling down. Employers should look for the best talent and offer competitive terms to attract the best people suitable to work in their industry - An A level is just a base qualification and means nothing unless coupled with aptitude and ability to think on the hoof.”
