Flood-damaged bridges being re-used for new railway station
Bricks from historic bridges over floodplains in Tewkesbury will be used to build new platforms for a heritage railway.
More than 700 tonnes of bricks from the embankment and bridges over the floodplain between the River Avon and Mythe have been demolished since late July.
The work, expected to last six months, is the final part of a series of major flood alleviation projects costing around £36million after the devastating floods in 2007.
Brick spoil, comprising red and blue Imperial-sized bricks, will be given to Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.
The masonry will once again see railway use because GWR is attempting to rebuild up to 10 coach-length platforms at Broadway Station.
Bill Britton, chairman of the Broadway Area Group of GWR volunteers, said the construction was “consuming bricks” at an alarming rate.
“The bricks are both red and blue and given that this is essentially brick spoil.
“We expect to recycle about 25 per cent of them for use in the platform walls.
The rest will be used as infill behind the platforms, and we need plenty of that as well.”
New metric bricks will be used for the station building, waiting room and signal box at the station.
The new bricks will be the same colour as the original station and as close to the original Imperial size.
The station building will be a similar design to its former self, although it will be longer.
Mr Britton added: “The bricks we will be going for even have an “age” fleck in them. We would, of course, prefer to use original bricks, but these are increasingly difficult to come by, and it would become a struggle to obtain a uniform colour and finish.
“Inevitably we would lose a lot of bricks in reclaiming them, while those of different ages and from different locations will differ in appearance.
“But rest assured, anyone visiting for the first time since the 1960s would certainly recognise this as the Broadway Station they were once familiar with.”
The work in Tewkesbury is being carried out by Costain – an international engineering and construction group.
The Mythe bridge used to be part of the former Midlands Railway’s Malvern to Ashchurch line.
