Food on the run for Gloucester shoppers
NEW King's Walk Co-Op is being billed as an opportunity for shoppers to grab food on the run as the supermarket opened its doors for the first time today.
The shop is the first from the Midcounties group to follow the 'food to go' format and has created 30 new jobs in the city centre.
A move towards more city centre locations is a break from the group's more traditional strategy of setting up in towns and rural areas.
It is replacing the Animal clothing store that closed last year.

A spokesman for The Midcounties Co-operative said: "People working in Gloucester, and other city centres, have shown they want high quality, good value food that can be consumed immediately.
"Our Food To Go format is designed to satisfy this requirement. This new store will offer a variety of Food To Go options, including coffee, sandwiches, baguettes and hot food."

“Can the city centre really sustain all the different retail shops providing the same things .......... Tesco Express will open in Southgate Street too soon ........ it's killing the smaller independent food shops . Surely they're at saturation point already , as householders are cutting right back .”
