Footpath hitch to M-way plan
FOOTPATHS could yet put the boot into a new £40 million motorway services at Brookthorpe, claim campaigners who are still fighting the controversial scheme.
Protests about three public rights of way being diverted to make way for the massive 70 acre development at Onger's Farm now mean there will now have to be a public inquiry.
The hearing could take a year to be organised, held and a decision announced, said Eric Hibbert, chairman of Brookthorpe with Whaddon Parish Council which is one of nine objectors.
"They are absolutely essential to the scheme really," Mr Hibbert said. "If you take it to its logical conclusion they would probably find some way around it. But it would have serious consequences and could take 12 months."

“Why not free radical - why can't motorway users and walkers be one and the same?
Who draws the line and says walkers not allowed to have cups of tea?”

“Nice idea, safeandnice, but unfortunately there will not be any access to the services for walkers, only for motorists from the M5.”

“Yes it's too late. The services are going ahead. Now is time to make sure the footpaths can stay where theyve always been. If they lead to the door of the restaurant the services might get some trade from passing ramblers, or a starting point for walks.”

“Agree with GlosCityRes - this seems to me to be a lost opportunity. The developers are going to win anyway - even the appellants admit that - but with more delay and cost. Wouldn't "tell you want - we won't appeal if you..." work better?”

“If they have won in Court against appeals, then a couple of footpaths isn;t going to be a major issue, and by your own admission you are doing something which you know will fail, wasting tax payers money - Surely this is an abuse of position? Why not just take it on the chin and work with the developer at this point.”
