Sales of new cars are on the up across the country with family runarounds clinching many spots in the top 10, according to new figures released yesterday.

New Ford Fiesta
More than two million new cars were sold last year which is up 5.3% on 2011.
The best selling car of 2012 was the Ford Fiesta with 109,265 sold and coming in second was the Vauxhall Corsa at 89, 434. Third was the Ford Focus, fourth was the Vauxhall Astra and coming in at number five was the Volkswagen Golf. Sixth was the Nissan Qashqal. The VW Polo also made the list in eight place.

According to the figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that drivers are moving away from high end models although the BMW 3 Series and 1 Series plus the Mercedes Benz C Class do still make the top 10.
Speaking in the Mirror, the SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said many motorists can no longer put off buying new models. "Showrooms have been offering competitive financial deals which have been a real incentive."

“IsitJimKerr - in regards to that particular Rover 75, I'm not sure the dealer does know what he's doing.
According to Parker's car price guide, a Rover 75 V8 on a 54-plate in that trim is worth just £1,375 at an independent dealer. That's one with 90,000 on the clock (average mileage at that age). The example on the market at £7,495 has only done 57,000 miles, but that pushes it's value up by (perhaps) a few hundred pounds at most, not by over £6,000. It's part-exchange value is less than £1,000.
Really don't see how anybody can justify that car at virtually £7,500 - maybe it's listed wrongly, and should be on at £2,500...??? Would be over-priced even at that.”

At £7,495 must be the most expensive Rover 75 in the world! Far too expensive, clearly only a Rover enthusiast would want it - and how many are there of those outside ex-Longbridge workers with their MG Rover redundancy still un-spent?
I suggest throw away the Glass's Guide book at THAT price! Take it to any motor dealer and you'd be (very) lucky to get £2,000 in part-ex.”

So I'm thinking he knows EXACTLY what he is doing.
While we all think we are budding, Jeremy Clarksons, Richard Hammonds or James Mays, we don't know everything, and there is still a market for big cars
Land Rover Group just posted 30% increase in turnover. Even though most of this went abroad, a cruise through London will see many high powered Vogues etc.
While there are still large two tonne vehicles on the road, I'm not going to feel too safe in my half a tonne of cheap plastic, with a three cylinder lawn mower engine, or a tonne of batteries that are using up precious resources and have to cover zillions of miles just to be made. That with a rechaarging rate that is ten times the usage rate.
If we all have these 'cars' then all's fair in love and crashes, but when I'm sat in a queue on a motorway, and some hooray Henry's chatting to his shooting chums, instead of watching the road, coming up behind me, I want something solid beneath me.
And while we can all bang on about saving this that or the other, for some, including me, I like a bit of comfort, and a two litre diesel German Sports Coupe does it for me. Couple it with a tiptronic automatic gearbox, and suddenly motoring is quite pleasureable again, so much so in fact, that one of Mrs IsitJimKear's New Year resolutions, is to do more out and about in the countryside!!...................whatever that entails!”

Wonder how long it's already been for sale, and how long it will remain on sale? Huge Ford V8, but not especially powerful given it's 4.6l displacement. Rather thirsty, no doubt expensive to insure, and no dealer network to maintain it (or can you get it serviced at a Ford dealership?).

“You only have to look on ebay at how little large petrol engined Mercs, BMW's, Range Rover's, Vauxhalls etc etc fetch now on an ebay auction, anything with a 2 litre engine or over or diesel plodding 4x4's are almost worthless now. Worst depreciation I've seen lately must be Saab's and the worst of all must be the now dead Rover range of cars. Most people would have enough change in the pocket to buy a Rover 75 on ebay!”

“Agreed, NibNobs. And bigger petrol-engined cars are now getting smaller-capacity engines with turbo-chargers. Gone are the days when a turbo slaughtered your fuel consumption - now when combined with a ultra-modern high-efficiency engine, they are helping to improve fuel efficiency whilst reducing emissions. The petrol market is cottoning-on to what the diesel market has known for 20 years.
People are still buying new large gas-guzzlers, so presumably can afford to run them (why spend £80k on a Range Rover, if you can't then afford the tax / insurance / fuel bills?), but the 2nd-hand-market for such vehicles must be dieing a painful death. The depreciation must be horrendous, at least on some larger vehicles. More money than sense...
I've had a sporty diesel for 3 years, mostly because I was doing 400 miles a week. My circumstances have changed and my mileage has dropped by a third, but it's still not gone down enough to justify changing back to a petrol-engined car when I replace my current car in the summer (assuming I do change it at all). My current diesel is a much nicer car to drive than the petrol hot-hatch it replaced. More powerful, more refined, more comfortable, better cruiser, and a lot cheaper to run.”

“Smaller cars are the future, although more & more medium size family cars including the new VW Golf have models with ZERO road tax. It amazes me how many people can afford or want to pay up to £450 a year road tax for a large 4x4 or large petrol engined car which struggles to do 20mpg in traffic! Zero road tax cars are the future....
why give this government anymore money than you have to?!!”
