NEWBURY 3 CINDERFORD 0

CINDERFORD failed to take advantage of an ill-disciplined Newbury side and lost their third consecutive game in National Two.

Only a first-half penalty from Newbury scrum-half Waylon Gasson separated the teams in gale force conditions as Cinderford recorded a losing bonus point for the second week running.

The home team had three men sin-binned at various stages of the game but Cinderford still could not get on the score sheet.

Cinderford's head coach and fly-half Phil Greenaway had an early chance to put his side in front with a penalty but the elements got the better of him.

However, Gasson then showed him exactly how it should be done to score the only points of the match after 15 minutes.

The first flash of yellow was shown to the eventual match-winning Gasson three minutes later when he retaliated to team-mate Scott Witcomb being felled by a flailing head.

Cinderford tried to step it up but to no avail with scrum-half Danny Pointon, in for the injured skipper Paul Knight, being halted by Martin Freeman in illegal fashion according to the referee.

Freeman appeared to be the innocent party in the fight that ensued shortly afterwards before eventually joining Gasson on the sidelines for a 10-minute breather.

Even with Newbury down to 13 men Cinderford still could not find a way through and things potentially got better for them when Dan Hodge was sin-binned.

Foresters' full-back Brett Turner (pictured) had a chance to level things up with a penalty but he could not conquer the conditions and Cinderford twice got to Newbury's line but could not find a way through.

NEWBURY: M Williams; Coxon-Smith, Berry, Catts, Freeman; Burton, Gasson; Rowland, Prosser, McGrath; Hodge, Ascroft-Leigh; Witcomb, Bentall, Jackson. Replacements: Oliver, Green, Pape, Perkins, Avery.

CINDERFORD: Turner; Winchle, Boston, Scourfield, Knight; Greenaway, Pointon; Smart, Duncan, Deacon; Bufton, Jones; Panoho, McNeil, Evans. Replacements: Fortey, Hall, Nicholls, Wilcox, Plumber.

“It must have been the most dismal performance of the season so far. It takes some doing to loose 3-0 to only 14 men on the park for 50mins of the match!! League 2S here we come! At least we'll save travelling time and money going to Lyd again!!”
