Future of M5 junction 10 to be discussed
A SPECIAL meeting to discuss the future of junction 10 of the M5 has been announced.
Tewkesbury Borough Council will host the meeting which will allow representatives from the Highways Agency, Gloucestershire Highways, Cheltenham Borough Council, Gloucester City Council and MPs to have their say on the issue.
The Highways Agency has indicated the bridge over the junction needs to be replaced.
But Gloucestershire organisations, businesses and residents have called for it to be made into a four-way junction at the same time due to the benefits it would bring to local businesses and communities.

It is hoped the meeting, the date for which is still being finalised, will allow the possibility of making the junction four-way to be fully investigated.
Leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council, Councillor Robert Vines, said: "The aim of this meeting is to get all interested parties around one table to discuss the future plans for this junction.
"The opportunities of opening it up to a four way route have been made loud and clear by a number of organisations, businesses and residents so it's absolutely vital that this option is given thorough consideration."
MP for Tewkesbury Laurence Robertson added: "I am very pleased to see that Tewkesbury Borough Council is taking the lead on bringing everyone together to discuss this issue.
"From the start I have made it clear that transforming the junction from a two-way into a four-way junction would bring huge benefits for the local area and I will continue to make this case."

“I just can't believe this! The costs they are quoting are for the purchase of homes next to the junction! All I can say is ask me and I'll supply the plans and judge them for yourselves, they will make the HA look like a bunch of fools like they are!”

The benifits making the junction two way is massive, and considering the bridge needs replacing, making it two way is killing two birds with one stone!”

“Is this the problem? The govmnt highways agency (or whoever) doesnt want the motorway to be used by local traffic - it wants it to be used by through traffic?
It can see theres a perfectly good A38 thats gradually been squandered. What would it take to return it to dual carriageway and improve the junctions so as to raise the limit all the way from the Gloucester bypass to the Tewkesbury bypass.
It'll need our own local traffic authority to get involved”

“Going round in circles on this. Original plan was for complete replacement of the bridge (costing £12m, and taking up to a year). Then it was announced that the bridge could be repaired using "innovative working techniques", whatever that means - obviously not originally considered when the need for works was first identified.
Then earlier this week the local BBC pages advised that the HA had announced there was no money for a junction upgrade, so it would be bridge works only, commencing in April.
Now this meeting (date TBC). Let's hope the local Council reps and the MPs can make the HA look at the whole thing again. Whilst they're at it, get them to look at the Air Balloon proposed trial shambles, too.”

“How can it be fully investigated in a meeting?
In a previous item HA said it had taken 2 years to design the £12m upgrade scheme.
For a 4 way scheme they take another 2 years to think about it and want £13m
How are they going to justify spending £13m if it can all be resolved in a single meeting”
