Gang man jailed for second time

A man has been jailed for a second time for breaching his gang injunction.

Ashley Nicholls-Perry, 20 and of no fixed abode, who was imprisoned last April for breaching the order, appeared again at Bristol Magistrates' Court yesterday (Wednesday January 16).

He was sentenced to nearly seven months – 211 days - behind bars for further breaches of his injunction in November and December 2012.

These included associating with another gang member and the use of threats and violence against a taxi driver.

Nicholls-Perry, originally from Gloucester, was one of two men to have conditions placed on him in 2011 meaning he was barred from activities including promoting gangs and being in a group of three or more people.

Gloucester City Council and Gloucestershire Police sought the injunction to tackle the level of gang related violence in the city.

Martin Shields, director of services and neighbourhoods for Gloucester City Council, commented: "This sentence demonstrates the commitment that all of the partners involved have given to dealing with the problems of anti-social behaviour in the city, making it a great place to live, work and visit. The message is very clear. Behaviour of this nature won't be tolerated."

A spokesperson for Gloucester City Homes' Project Solace said: "This is a great result which can be attributed to the strong partnership approach with Gloucester City Council and Gloucestershire Constabulary". 

"This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly by all agencies tackling crime and anti-social behaviour in our communities.  We are hopeful the defendant will realise the consequences of this behaviour and engage with the support offered to change his behaviour."

Gloucester Inspector Neil Smith said: "We're very happy with this sentence and the whole process shows how meaningful these orders are.

"In terms of deterrent it has generally been effective, with Nicholls-Perry restricted from behaving as he would have liked and causing harm in the community.

"But now that he has breached the injunction again he has found himself back behind bars very quickly.

"He's been shown we aren't messing around here and that there are severe consquences for doing these things. We're now hoping he'll finally come to the obvious conclusion that he should stop behaving like this.

"We can also assure people we will continue to monitor his activities when he does come back to the community so if he does return to old habits we'll be prepared.

"The gang problem in Gloucester is nowhere near the scale of big cities but it was something some members of our community were badly affected by and we had to act on.

"The actions of police, council and Project Solace will continue to ensure the improvement we have seen across the city doesn't stop and that people can live free from intimidation."
