Stranded residents have complained about road closures for the Gloucester 10K race.

The first-ever 10K race for the city centre, held last Sunday, saw a number of city centre roads closed for several hours.

  1. Race entrants Jordan Macefield and Matt Langurt-Higgins, from Bussage, near Stroud

But one resident, who runs a care providing firm, said: "We work with a lot of vulnerable people in the city centre and they expect our girls to be there for them.

"I support the idea of the race but it shouldn't be in the city centre. Why don't they do it in the countryside where it isn't going to affect people?"

A Gloucester Docks resident told users of Thisisgloucestershire.co.uk that he arrived to work an hour late after not being allowed to leave the area.

Another resident said: "I suggest before they organise another race, the route does not shut off a whole community .The Pied Piper race is much larger but we do not have this hassle."

Amy Budd, marketing manager for race organisers GO2, said: "We're sorry that some residents were affected by the road closures.

"Making a race traffic-free always causes some disruption, but we worked hard to keep it to a minimum."

She added that closures were advertised in the media, through leaflets and road signs. All roads reopened by 10.55am.

“so no letter but you knew your road was closed for it, so perhaps the responsibility was dropped by the council but perhaps you could of done a bit of research too, partial blame on both parties it seems”

“Yes I knew that my usual route was going to be shut as I'd seen the signs on my commute last week, but I didn't know that every other road was going to be shut because I don't go that way. No leaflets were put through my letterbox either...

Roads that I tried that were at least partially closed - Stroud Rd, half of Cole Ave, Bristol Rd, the road that goes around the park from Go Outdoors to the Quays (don't know what it's called!) and half of Trier Way.”

“I left the house before the roads were closed, but was then left unable to get home again as every single route to my house was closed. After half an hour of driving around exhausting all options I had to give up and go the Quays to pass the time!

I support the event 100%, but better planning for residents is definitely needed in the future!”

“so they give you advance notice, and probably you didn't take heed of the warnings so therefore look to blame someone else straight away ....”

“Well Amy Budd forgot to put a leaflet through my door. Good job I wasn't someone who needed to drive to work on Sunday, as I wouldn't have been able to get out until after 10.55am. In fact, if the road signs are to believed, Brunswick Road is still closed”
