Gloucester Gets behind National Empty Homes Week
To encourage landlords to bring empty properties back into use Gloucester City Council has teamed up with housing charity Chapter 1 during National Empty Homes Week
At the present time, empty homes in England account for 3% of the total housing stock. This new partnership aims to bring twenty-eight empty properties back into use by 2015 and ensure they are managed and maintained to a high standard.

As part of the initiative, subject to survey, renovations and improvement works are carried out to bring the property back into use.
The property is then rented to people on the council's housing waiting list and professionally managed and maintained by a partner housing association – with guaranteed five-year income and the return of the property in good condition.
Councillor Colin Organ, Cabinet Member for Housing, Health and Leisure, Gloucester City Council said:
"The project really is a win- win situation for communities and families in Gloucester and the owners of these properties.
"Landlords who take up the initiative will benefit from having their properties renovated and brought up to the high standards required by housing associations, such as Chapter1.
"This really is a hassle-free and cost-effective way to rent out a property. Bringing properties back into use can help contribute significantly to the housing supply required to meet local needs, prevent anti-social behaviour and help transform areas. This initiative couldn't come at a better time as empty homes are high on everyone's agenda.

“I reported a property in my street, via the Channel 4 website, as having been abandoned several years ago by the owner. I received an e-mail from the Council to say that they are working with the owner to try and improve the condition of the property. At present I believe it presents a health risk to anyone who lives anywhere near it, the owner is using it as a repository for rubbish, in its current condition it is uninhabitable.
I would urge anyone else who has an empty property in their street to report it, though I don't expect the Council to do much to rectify the situation if my experience is anything to go by. Get onto your councilor, bend their ear, ask them to raise the matter with the Council. Let's get people living in these empty houses and reduce the tax burden that we are all paying to keep people in temporary accommodation which is often unsuited to their needs.”
