Gloucester Rugby: Davies hails Robson over his Fiji showing

GLOUCESTER will not have to worry about their options at number ten following Dan Robson's Fiji fly-half feats, says Nigel Davies.

With senior kickers Freddie Burns and Billy Twelvetrees called into England's training camps in the past fortnight, director of rugby Davies was then robbed of Tim Taylor.

The former Nottingham man failed to recover from his Bordeaux head bashing for last Friday's trip to Ospreys and in stepped Freddie's younger brother Billy to fill the void.

The 18-year-old was forced off injured, and is expected to miss the next six weeks with a broken clavicle, with Robson earning a shot against the international side on Tuesday night at Kingsholm.

The result was a faultless kicking display from tee to touch, including a nonchalant 40-metre pressure effort to drag his side back to within eight points just before half-time.

Davies already knew the abilities the 20-year-old possessed at scrum-half but can now sleep easy if anything else should happen to the rest of his fly-half hoard.

"Dan got the backs going very well at times and is just a very skilful rugby player," said, former fly-half turned centre, Davies..

"Billy has broken his clavicle so he will be out for some time and Dan can play at ten but it is a new position for him that we looked at him to go with.

"But with our injury status and the fact that we had two of our potential tens away with England, Dan was our only other option and he did a remarkable job considering."

Robson's showing could earn him a second shot at the crucial playmaker role for the LV=Cup visit of London Welsh to Kingsholm tomorrow despite some regulars potentially returning.

Half-back partner Dave Lewis had a closer look at last year's England Under-20s scrum-half on Tuesday night and is convinced he is a more than able deputy.

Despite being one of 11 Cherry and Whites aged under 25 who played on Tuesday night, Robson has already played ten times this season.

Lewis said that if players are good enough, they are old enough.

"Dan was outstanding at ten. He was a bit nervous before but I could not fault him," said Lewis.

"He was great and had a 100 per cent kicking record so massive credit goes to him.

"We both played ten when we were younger but saying that it is not the easiest thing to do, especially at this level when you have got 6ft 7in Fijians flying at you left, right and centre.

"We had a bit of a game plan around the kicking side of it, but Dan is a good player and age does not come into it when you have got that talent and he did well."
