Gloucester hope Freddie Burns' left knee injury is just a recurrence of a problem suffered in pre-season.

Fly-half Burns limped out of Saturday's 36-16 Mont de Marsan victory after just 12 minutes, after suffering a medial knee ligament strain.

The 22-year-old suffered damage to the same knee in pre-season that proved nothing too serious, and Gloucester boss Nigel Davies hopes this latest blow ends up the same.

Gloucester bosses were frustrated with alleged foul play in Saturday's Amlin Challenge Cup victory, which secured a home quarter-final against Biarritz.

The Cherry and Whites submitted a citing report European Rugby Cup chiefs, alleging that Mont de Marsan replacement prop Morgan Phelipponneau kicked Shaun Knight twice in the head.

Gloucester made eye-gouging allegations made against Mont de Marsan back in October when Andy Hazell was sent off and then banned for 14 weeks.

No action was taken against the Frenchmen then – but this time rugby director Davies hopes ERC will act.

Davies explained: "Freddie has a problem with the medial ligament in his left knee, similar to what he had in pre-season.

"That kept him out for about three weeks then, and fingers crossed this won't be any worse than that.

"But we'll have to keep assessing that to see how he holds up.

"He'll link up with the England camp as planned."

“I have to say that Harden, our best and first choice tight head, has been in supreme form this season. Long may it continue.”

“I'm looking forward to Harden's return sooner rather than later. The scrum is underpowered without him and he is our best and most talented tight head.”

“Nigel Davies knows that Harden is his top tight head; everyone else knows that Rupert is the best tight head at Glaws. The only one who thinks otherwise and thinks he is better than the professional coach and Gloucester Rugby DoR is the multi-troll dave_rh/Django_G/glawsteruk1/akadau/peh45/Kap721.”

“We need our first choice and best tight head prop, RUPERT HARDEN, back for the Premiership games. We can't go into another crucial game with an underpowered scrum such as we had for the last few games.”

“RUPERT HARDEN... Nigel Davies' selection as his first choice tight head. Not second or third but FIRST CHOICE.”

“Rupert Harden is the number one tight-head at Gloucester. He is the head coach's first choice; he is the best and we need him back to start in the critical Premiership game against Saints.”

“Harden is the best. It's as simple as that and the troll dave_rh/Django_G/glawsteruk1/akadau/etc. knows it but daren't admit it because of the extra egg on his face having been proved wrong time after time by Harden's wonderful performances for Gloucester Rugby.”

“Rupert Harden... First choice, the best and top rated tight head at Gloucester Rugby. It must stick in the gut of the troll dave_rh, aka Django_G, aka akadau, etc. every time the knowledgeable Nigel Davies selects our man Rupert Harden to start.”

“Harden had a tremendous season so far. He must be one of the prime candidates for Player of the Season.”
