This is based on factors which include the size of the business base along with business start ups and closures.

The report also highlights the city's entrepreneurial skill, rating it in the top ten for the number of patents that had been approved.

The skill of the local workforce is reflected in the city's ranking as 9th nationally for having the lowest percentage of low skills.

And Gloucester is again in the top ten amongst cities having the maximum broadband speed – a boost for most businesses.

Council Leader, Paul James, commented: " This report follows on from another recent report by Duport that showed Gloucester's economic performance was bucking the national trend.

" It provides further clear evidence for why Gloucester is the place to live and work and why so many businesses are choosing to start up or relocate here,

" Not only are we doing everything we can to encourage the major investors but we balance that with our approach to small and medium businesses.

" We currently have a £120,000 package which covers grants to help new businesses with rents, rates and property repairs.

" When you consider that some 50 businesses have received this and other tailored help and more than 180 businesses have attended our start up courses it is no wonder that Gloucester is doing so well."

“Typical Tory. Business is the be all. Everything is about money. No mention from Paul James about the people of Gloucester. The man should concentrate on providing services for the city and not playing PR for the local Tory party.”

“If patents are a sign of success we're all going to hell in a handcart.

Besides, walk round the place and you'll see this 'report' is absolute chuff.”
