Gloucester city councillor Paul Toleman (C, Westgate) helped to organise the work and chose which bollards needed to be removed from Westgate Street in order for the street cleaner to manoeuvre more easily.

He said: "After the work is done the cleaner will be able to weave in and out of the bollards that are left and its cleaning will be much more effective.

"Beforehand there were areas it couldn't quite reach, but now that won't be the case."

He added: "We also wanted to give the pedestrian areas a good clean with the blast washer and repair any broken slabs.

"It helps with the cafe culture we are trying to promote in the city, people like to sit in nice clean areas."

The work should be completed by the end of the day.
