Gloucester graffiti a Banksy?
DOES Gloucester have Banksy artwork of its own?
Graffiti has popped up behind Tayntons Solicitors in Clarence Street, and in the former Prince of Wales pub car park in Station Road.
Although similar to the style of the world-renowned Bristol enigma, it is not believed to be the work of the man himself.
Ivan Taylor, chairman of the Westgate Quarter group of retailers, said there is a fine line between art and vandalism.

He said: "It's in the eye of the beholder I guess isn't it.
"If it's done tastefully then it could be argued that it's street art.
"But if it's damaging someone's property then it has to be vandalism."

“very similar work had been painted on the hoardings at the old Gloscat site, only to be painted out when someone decided to paint insults to the developer and attacks on Paul James. Pity, as it was interesting artwork”

“Definitely not a Banksy - not his style at all. Don't know what the point of this article is really? Every time a new bit of graffiti springs up... hold the front page! Is this one a Banksy? No, again...”

“Tried to post last night but for some reason the site wouldn't let me...
I must confess that my views on graffiti are inconsistent and hypocritical. Although I am with dogs_life and would welcome Banksy to paint a highly valuable piece of graffiti on my private property, I would not be happy with any old graffiti-ist with a spray can daubing on my walls. I also hate to see graffiti on decent buildings. But if it is done well I think it brightens up otherwise dull and un-cared for parts of the city. Some places seem to positively encourage graffiti artists to ply their skills in certain areas to good effect, and the mainstream acceptance of Banksy's work as art does tend to suggest that some graffiti can be considered 'good'.”

“I'm with DarrelK on this one. Not all graffiti is good (artists that just paint their 'tags' I would consider bad) but some examples that are appearing in both Gloucester & Cheltenham are really quite interesting. As with all works of art some people will love the paintings others won't (I'm not a fan of the great masters but each to their own). At least it gives the street scene some individuality and (as long as the artist is considerate to their surroundings) looks a darn site better than advertising hoardings or the never ending stream of Tesco signs we seem to be getting at the moment.
daveofglos - if Banksy knocked on my door and asked if he could paint a picture on my property (and yes Banksy asks permission) I would jump at the chance. Just as people would love to own a Vincent Van Gogh, I would love to own a Banksy.”

“DarrelK - would you accept graffiti on YOUR property? - if not, and I suspect not, then don't say it is ever "good" !!!”

“As far as I'm concerned, there is no such thing as good graffiti. Perhaps the people who claim to like this "artform" would be happy to have it appear on something that they own?”

“Quite a lot of good graffiti appearing around Gloucester. This image first appeared on the hoarding around GlosCat before the political graffiti started the painting wars. There is also an outbreak of bananas in the alleyway off Westgate Street and, best of all, an excellent picture of King Kong climbing the Cathedral in Severn Road.”
