Jones, 21, of Cheltenham Road East, Churchdown, terrified the man so much he was "frozen with fear", Gloucester Crown Court heard.

"He shouted 'I've got a loaded gun. Don't move or I'll kill you'.

"Jones got to three feet away from him and stopped. He pointed the gun in his face. Then Jones seemed to realise that he was not the man he was looking for and he ran off."

Mrs Hennessy said armed police were sent to Jones' home, where a realistic imitation Beretta semi-automatic pistol was found.

Jones had previous convictions for robbery, affray possessing offensive weapons and criminal damage. He pleaded guilty to possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause Mr Hussain to believe unlawful violence would be used against him and was jailed for a year.

Defence solicitor Nicola Berryman said Jones had been involved in an incident earlier that night and had lost a tooth.

He went home to clean himself up, saw the gun, and decided to take it out to look for the man involved.

Judge Jamie Tabor told Jones: "You ran up to an entirely innocent man and uttered those words, which made him absolutely terrified."

“A year.....for what was to all intents and purposes, a real gun.
Jeeeeeeez, it's worth risking taking and using guns and knives, with this Judge Jamie Tabor presiding!”
