Robert Burton, managing director of the UK branch of the American company, said: "There has been a real buzz here this morning. We opened another branch in Uxbridge last year but we didn't see anything like this. The shopping centre has been unbelievably busy.

"Many people haven't tried a pretzel before but they love them when they do."

The branch opened on the same day as clothes store Internacionale opened its new, larger premises in the same shopping centre.

“They may well be low in fat, but - do we actually need to snack between meals? I see quite a lot of obese people eating whilst they are on the move around town.

Prepare your own meals so that you know exactly what you are eating, don't snack between meals, then have an occasional treat while out with a friend. Lots of talk, little eating and not so much weight gain.”

“Do we really need more of these outlets when large numbers of the British public are unhealthily obese, costing the stretched NHS a fortune in treatment as well as all the heavy duty equipment to cope with the weight/size of patients.

" Everything in moderation" is fine as a principle, but there is so little choice of healthy foods that some people just go overboard on junk food.”

“Those Auntie Anne's pretzels are amazingly good - they have a stall in Cheltenham's Regent Arcade. Not cheap though.”
