Gloucester theatre roars back into life
The opening night of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at the Picturedrome Theatre in Barton was a rip-roaring success.
The world famous story from the Chronicles of Narnia, written by C.S. Lewis and first published in 1950, arrived in Gloucester with a bang.
The play opened at the former Olympus theatre, in Barton Street, on Friday and it was packed to the rafters with eager theatre goers.
Sandra Watters, from Gloucester, was at the performance with her children. She said: "I would definitely recommend it. It was brilliant.
"I would say it is for slightly older children and adults. The scenery was good. They had to move quickly at times to change all the props around and the way they made the wardrobe work was really effective.
"Even without kids you would enjoy it. It is good to see something like this in Gloucester. It was quite a long performance, at two and a half to three hours, but the time just flew by."
The play was written by Adrian Mitchell, produced by Adrian Locher and directed by Alexander Gifford.
In the programme, Mr Gifford said: "I hope that The Gloucester Theatre Company's production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe will do justice to the story's incredible richness and power.
"I hope that audiences will be entertained and uplifted by it – and that it will successfully re-launch The Picturedrome Theatre as an important cultural venue in Gloucestershire and beyond."
Tickets cost £8, with £7 concessions, from 01452 503050 or online at www.ashacentre.org/narnia.

“Took in the show on Sunday whilst visiting with friends. The Picturedrome is a lovely old atmospheric theatre and it was packed with adults and children, all of who clearly were enjoying their afternoon out! One group arrived in a double decker red (London?) bus.
I doubt if I will have a better theatre outing this Xmas and certainly no better value for money.”

“"Need to see more of our local people here.
Hope we have not offended anyone in any way? " I'm sure you haven't offended anyone.
One problem might be that the web address given at the end of the article just comes up as "page not available". Have tried without the /narnia on the end but couldn't find anything on that website relating to the production at all.”
