NATIONAL Health Service leaders have been challenged to keep £400million-worth of services in the public sector after a massive public response.

Some 96% of 2,500 people called on NHS Gloucestershire to re-think plans for a not-for-profit firm to run nine community hospitals and 3,000 NHS staff after a legal challenge from Stroud pensioner Michael Lloyd.

And on Monday board members will decide whether to side with public opinion after the way was cleared to consider establishing a new NHS trust to run the services.

The other option the board of NHS Gloucestershire and NHS Swindon face is to put the services out for private tender - something Stroud Against the Cuts and other campaigners feared would open a back door to privatisation of the NHS.

Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Stroud, David Drew said: "The public voted overwhelmingly for option one (for a new NHS trust), this follows on from a similar vote by staff.

"Credit must be given to all  those campaigners from across the county and political spectrum, who have fought to keep the services in the NHS.

"I am proud to be part of a campaign that has stood up to national and local bureaucrats against all odds, I trust the board will follow the lead given to them by the public."

The services are worth £400million over three years and NHS Gloucestershire chief executive Jan Stubbings said: "The people of Gloucestershire deserve the best possible NHS services and we are committed to making sure they receive these in the coming years.

"Whoever runs the community health services in the future has to be able to meet the needs of local people, provide safe, high quality care and treatment and make the most of the money and resources available.

"Board members understand that they have an important responsibility to consider the options very carefully."

“What a brilliant result for keeping Gloucestershire NHS community services public and against privitization. The local NHS board better listen up!”

“"I am proud to be part of a campaign ..." say David Drew. Well only a very small part as Stroud Labour Party pulled out of the campaign many months ago, sighting 'political differences' with the campaign which has been just as critical of Labour as well as the Con-Dem government for the shameful way they have treated the NHS as a profit source for business.”

“Isn't it funny that the privet sector when they screw up an operation or procedure send the victim to a NHS A&E or ICU for treatment at our expense......”

“Lets give the board members a great big handshake. They earn more money than Nurses and make decisions that not only affect their staff but also the very patients they serve. I do believe the Social Enterprise was blocked by some upstanding member of the public in Stroud. However how many people actually realise that most services including the Community Nurse's are now run by Social Services. Managers who have little or no nurse training are now runnng these service's. Staff feel demoralised and some have yet to even meet their managers. Nursing in the Community is now about filling in paperwork (as is working in Glos Royal) and ensuring you dot the i's and cross the t's. Nursing should be about caring and looking after patients as if they were members of your own family, not about justifying your experience, training and caring. Board members should worry more about ensuring best patient care and less about the total bureaucracy, making themseles appear that they actually care about these services whilst drawing large salaries to justify their positions. Nurses's should be valued and respected by managers and the general public alike. I want to thank the Nurse's who have cared for and understood what I have been through, without you I would surely have crumbled!!!”
