A NEW production of Godspell is set to light up the Playhouse Theatre stage next week.

Jacob's Well Productions, directed by Tim Benton, performs the '70s musical at the Cheltenham theatre from next Wednesday to Saturday.

The show is based on the gospels of Matthew and Luke, interspersed with upbeat modern music and lyrics from hymns.

Expect Stephen Schwartz's familiar tracks like Learn Your Lessons Well, Day by Day and Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord.

It's even enjoyed a recent Broadway run in its 40-year history and was made into a film, starring Victor Garber, in 1973.

Producer Libby Wall said Jacob's Well was a Christian theatre company which aimed to engage wider audiences.

The theatre company is donating all show proceeds to African charity Masurura, which helps children in some of the poorest areas of Kenya.

Many youngsters there cannot go to primary school because they are too poor to afford the uniform and Libby hopes the show's donation will make a difference.

Shows start at 7.45pm, with an extra Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Tickets cost £10, and £8 for the matinee performance.
