SIR Henry Elwes and his wife Carolyn, Lady Elwes, have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

The celebration was marked with a party for all staff at their Colesbourne Park estate and a blessing at their village church, led by the Canon Michael Irving, who is also a "good friend" of the couple.

The pair were married on September 8, 1962, 18 months after they met at a party.

Sir Henry, who was keeping quiet about the details of their engagement, was the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire for 18 years, before retiring in 2010.

His duties have included planning and conducting Royal visits, as well as representing the county. He was frequently accompanied by his wife.

He said: "We've done lots of things together over the years. I was Lord Lieutenant for 18 years and we attended a lot together.

"We have a lot of common interests as well, in the countryside, gardening and fishing."

He added that the secret for a long and happy marriage was tolerance and understanding.
