Although the home side had the majority of the play they were unable to put daylight between themselves and the visitors and they got duly punished.
Both teams had their first-choice goalkeepers unavailable and had to rely on their outfield players to fill the position.
Dan Hearn had an early cross cleared and Sprigmore also had a shot which the keeper easily saved but these two combined on 10 minutes to give the home side the lead.
Hearn crossed from the right and Sprigmore's effort was pushed onto the post but the striker, nicknamed 'Sniffer' pounced on the rebound.
Lewis Phelps was finding plenty of space down the left but repeatedly ran into three or four Charlton Rovers' defenders as he cut back in to take a shot.
At the other end, Ben Major, the first of Gotherington's three keepers had little to do but was helpless on 21 minutes as the Reds striker took a shot from a narrow angle on the right side and the deflection off Phelps took the ball spiralling over Major into the corner.
Major was replaced by Hearn in goal and immediately he was involved in Gotherington's best move, Ted Jameson held the ball up and played Phelps in on the left, the winger looked up and found Major on the edge of the area, dead centre, and his hard drive went straight at the keeper when a foot either side would have seen Gotherington take the lead.
On 27 minutes Gotherington took the lead when the Reds keeper allowed a shot from Major to trickle under his body and into the net.
The second half began with an early free kick for the Reds just outside the area with Hearn making a good save to keep the ball out, moments later a second free kick in a similarly central position was again hit straight at Hearn and he made the save. Reds were creating plenty of chances, a flick over the bar and a volley wide and Major replied for Gotherington with an effort just wide of the target.
Gotherington finally got a foothold in the second half as Major had an effort pushed round the post and from the resulting corner Hearn found Major again and his header went straight at the keeper.
Hearn was next to miss a chance to extend the lead, Monty New crossing from the right where Hearn stood all alone but he could not get a good contact with the header and the ball went wide.
As the game went into injury time Gotherington had a corner as they looked to play out the final seconds, however the Reds broke down the field and won their own corner. From this the ball found its way out to the left, the Reds winger played the ball back into a crowded box and the striker headed the ball home from a yard out. Gotherington restarted the match but the final whistle went moments later to give both teams a deserved point.
