FANS of the Cherry and Whites have shown their support for a greyhound rescue charity by donating rugby shirts to be turned into dog coats.

Alfie, a seven-year-old veteran of 104 greyhound races, turned out in a Gloucester rugby shirt donated by a fan online to the Greyhound Rescue West of England charity.

Gill Meadows from the charity contacted the Shedweb forum appealing for shirts to be sent in to help raise the charity's profile. Alfie joined two other rescue dogs, Ella and Chester, in their fancy new coats to help collect donations before Gloucester's win over rivals Bath at Kingsholm on Saturday.

"These dogs make great pets as they are odourless and short haired," said Gill. "They only need a couple of 20-minute walks each day, there are so many needing good homes." The charity finds new homes for 800 dogs each year.

“This is a particularly well run charity. We have had pets from them over many years. I am allergic to house dust and with it dog dander but I can bury my nose in the fur of these and not suffer.

One might think given their size that they would not be suitable for pensioners. The opposite is the case. They walk quietly. Need at most two twenty minute walks. Are cheap to feed, and when in the home are real couch potaotoes sleeping on the floor or more likely on the sofa. If on the floor they are easily stepped over as they don't move.

They are not all hell bent on chasing cats. Indeed we had a cat that ruled the dog. Greyhound Rescue West of England have a website http://tinyurl.com/d2oc2d4 which gives a guide to the dogs history, cat friendliness etc.

The most common phrase used is 'Looking for that permanent sofa'. Perhaps you could offer one?”
