Gruelling canoe challenge for 1Rifles double amputee
A gruelling challenge is being undertaken by a soldier who lost both his legs in Afghanistan.
Colour Serjeant Danny Spender from 1st Battalion the Rifles, based at Beachley, together with close friend and team mate CSjt Barry Welch, is attempting to beat records on the Devizes to Westminster Canoe marathon.
CSjt Spender lost both his legs in late August 2011 whilst serving with 1Rifles in Afghanistan. Within seven weeks he was walking again and within one year he was climbing in Spain.
Danny is now teaming up with CSjt Welch, undertaking the 125 miles by kayak, down the Kennet and Avon Canal and then the River Thames.

Danny was serving with Barry in Afghanistan when he was injured and they have remained very close friends. They came up with the idea to try the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon as a way to challenge themselves but also to help raise money for The Rifles charity Care for Casualties.
The Rifles Charity was set up to help assist casualties during their rehabilitation process.
