FOREST GREEN manager Jim Harvey has finally had some joy in the loan market, snapping up Wrexham defender Darran Kempson on a month-long deal.

Kempson, 23, was expected to make his Rovers debut in last night's Setanta Shield third round tie against Oxford United at the New Lawn.

Also eligible to play in the FA Cup, the centre-back has played under Harvey before at Morecambe and will be expected to help shore up Rovers' leaky defence.

Kempson began his career as a trainee at Preston North End, though it was during a loan spell at Accrington Stanley that he first came to Harvey's attention and he moved to Christie Park in March 2005.

He was a key member of the Morecambe side that reached the Conference play-offs the following season, but fell out of favour at the club when Harvey was controversially replaced in the dugout by Sammy McIlroy.

Kempson returned to the Football League with Crewe Alexandra before joining Bury on loan in February 2007, helping the Shakers avoid relegation.

He spent last season at Shrewsbury Town, then moved to the Racecourse under Brian Little, but he has struggled for first-team football since Dean Saunders took over the managerial reins last month.

Harvey said: "It's been well known that we've been in the market for an experienced centre-half, and it was a blow when (Cheltenham Town's) Gavin Caines decided to pull out of a move a couple of weeks ago.

"I know Darren well from my time at Morecambe, where he was a terrific performer, and he fits the bill in terms of experience and a strong attitude.

"The fact that he can play in the FA Cup is a major bonus as we have a massive game at Team Bath in the first round on Sunday."

l FOREST GREEN midfielder Alex Lawless has been named in the Wales C squad to play Finland in Llanelli on November 18.
