Health secretary insists changes to GP services caused A&E chaos
HEALTH secretary Jeremy Hunt has blamed changes to GPs for chaotic scenes at hospitals’ A&E departments.
Speaking at the Age UK annual conference, Mr Hunt said the “disastrous” changes to GP contracts have led to the decline in quality at the departments.
This comes after concerns that services at Cheltenham General Hospital’s A&E department might be reduced.
The Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has insisted there are no plans to close the A&E department in the town.

Mr Hunt added that the said the changes have contributed to an additional four million people turning up at emergency departments each year, according to reports.
But the doctors have hit back. Dr Mark Porter, chair of the council at the British Medical Association said the analysis was “completely simplistic”.
