Imagine Matt Damon sprinting through the corridors of Cheltenham Town Hall in his next Hollywood blockbuster.

Or Robert Downey Jr looking for clues at Pittville Pump Room in his second Sherlock Holmes movie.

Well, according to top movie location scouts, it’s not  as unlikely as it first appears.

A team of experts were given a tour of the town yesterday and they say it has the aesthetic potential to feature in future films.

The group, who cast their eyes over the town’s Regency terraces, included location managers for hit films The Bourne Ultimatum, Sherlock Holmes and Brideshead Revisted.

Jane Soans, who helped find locations for scenes in Brideshead, said: “It’s a great opportunity to get to know Cheltenham better and build a picture of what kind of filming would be feasible. The town boasts fantastic Georgian architecture and beautiful terraces, which you wouldn’t get in London. It has potential.”

The experts consisted of 10 members of The Guild of Location Managers, who have worked on a diverse range of productions.

Organised by film agency South West Screen in partnership with Cheltenham Tourism, the tour took them to the Queen’s Hotel, Imperial Gardens, Pittville Pump Room, Town Hall and Cheltenham Racecourse.

Philip Lobban, who worked on The Bourne Ultimatum starring Matt Damon, said: “Our job is to find venues to suit a particular film or TV scene.

“Having seen more of Cheltenham we will be able to visualise what kind of scenes might work here. The area’s diversity means it has a lot going for it.”

South West Screen, funded by UK Film and the South West Regional Development Agency, organised the tour to attract productions to the area – from big screen blockbusters to TV shows and commercials.

Fiona Francome, a production service manager at the agency, said: “It’s about putting Cheltenham forward as an ideal venue for film. We have given our guests a broad overview of what kind of thing the town can facilitate. We can do anything from period drama to modern film settings. We also have locations such as the racecourse where you could build an entire set.”

Cheltenham Tourism has run a film desk for the past 10 years, helping to bring productions such as Butterflies, Vanity Fairand Skins to the town.
