Gloucestershire families are set to learn more about Diwali when the Holst Birthplace Museum stages a special family event dedicated to the Hindu festival of lights.

Gustav Holst's compositions were influenced by many different cultures. He was particularly interested in Sanskrit literature and Hindu mythology and this theme was explored in the museum's summer exhibition Gustav Holst, An Englishmen Abroad.

Museum volunteers will be dressed in saris. There'll be a delicious aroma of 'Chai' – Indian tea – permeating the museum from the range in the Victorian kitchen and traditional sweets for children.

Sara Salvidge, Education and Events Assistant said, "Gustav Holst's interests have allowed the museum to widen its own horizons. This is only the beginning of our Indian and Hindu themed events. In the future we'll be working on a dance/drama with Gloucester's Hindu Cultural Association and we're also planning an Indian and Hindu culture session for schools."

The museum's opening hours are 10.00am – 4.00pm. The children's activity is a drop-in session from 10.30am – 3.00pm (no booking required). For this event children are admitted FREE with a paying adult. The Henna Painting will take place 11.30am – 2.30pm.
