Hopeful conducted herself with dignity
HOW refreshing to see a candidate who hopes to be elected to public office conducting herself with great dignity.
At a hustings organised by Victim Support, Victoria Atkins demonstrated her excellent qualities for the role of Police and Crime Commissioner after she was barracked by some members of the public as she set out why she believes she will make a good commissioner.
-

Victoria Atkins (Con).
In essence, she explained how she will act without fear or favour for all the people of Gloucestershire, how she will be very comfortable taking the Oath of Impartiality and how she will do her duty as this important position requires.
Finally she pledged to ensure the best value for money and not to increase the burden on Council Tax payers. She will be the people of Gloucestershire's Police and Crime Commissioner.

“This has to be one of the least impartial 'articles' on TIG.
What is it? Is it 'News' or 'Opinion'? If it's a readers article why is it labeled 'Stroud Life'? Who is Anthony Powell Chalford? Is he left over from a failed copy and paste exercise? Is he a journalist or a reader contributing?
This article leaves you with more questions than information.
The label 'Independent' simply prevents you from knowing the candidates real views before you vote them in? Do we expect our ministers to have fought at the front before becoming Defence Minister? No, of course not, so why should somebody have to have been a police officer to do the job? The police commisioner will not be out in their deer stalker aiming to solve the latest crime.
The Home Office has asked police to make 20% budget cuts by 2015, and the government wants police commissioners so that they instead of the government can take the blame for the poorer policing that will result. Why not follow GlosYap2's advice and boycott the the vote? This will deprive them of legitimacy and let the government know how few really want to see a police commisioner. The Electoral Reform Society have already predicted the vote will be a disaster.”

“Paul_64 - thanks for posting the links to Ms. Atkins' history of trying to get elected. She has been about a bit.
I note (from the link to Orpington 2009) that she is the daughter of Sir Robert Atkins MEP (Cons, North-West England), so she is well-connected politically. Which is a further black mark against her name, given this isn't a political election.
Nice try, Victoria, but it's a no from me.”

“Alphonso2
Yes, she has been chasing nominations around the country.
She was committed to the people of Salisbury when she wanted to be their MP in 2010 .
http://tinyurl.com/6mm555x
Previously committed to serve the people of Maccelsfield in 2009
http://tinyurl.com/7rd3xpm
Or indeed Orpington in 2009
http://tinyurl.com/86d6rt8
Why isn't she still committed to serving the people Orpington, Maccelsfield or Salisbury any more?
P.S. Do we really need another barrister in public office; in 2005 nearly 20% of Tory MPs were barristers or solicitors.”

“This Tory candidate has a history of moving round the country in an attempt to get elected.
She fails to mention Conservative policies that have reduced police officer numbers and have closed local police stations causing an increase in crime in Gloucestershire (HMIC figures)”
