NEWNHAM horseball duo Caz Maycock and Bryony Goodwin won silver medals at the fifth FIHB Ladies European Championships in Ponte de Lima, Portugal.

The eight-strong senior British squad claimed the highest place ever achieved by any British team.

They beat Portugal, Spain and Belgium before losing to France on the final day of the competition.

One small consolation saw skipper Zoe Kerry presented with the championship's top senior goalscorer trophy.

Newnham-on-Severn also had two representatives in the Great Britain men's senior team that took part in the first FIHB Men's Horseball World Championships.

Adam Maycock and Chris Radley were part of the British squad which finished ninth after playing teams from Spain, Germany, Canada and Brazil.

The men's team thrashed Canada 16-3 and Germany 10-1 in their final play-off matches.

Ashleigh Bailey and Caitlin Davis, who play with the Under-16 juniors for Newnham-on-Severn horseball club represented the Great Britain Under-16 team.

The juniors just missed out on fourth place to the Belgium team and came fifth in the fifth FIHB Under-16 Junior European Championships.
