Residents and councillors are calling for action after bad weather wore away the road surface at a Hucclecote pothole blackspot.

Liberal Democrat councillors Bill Crowther and David Brown have contacted the owner of the Hucclecote Shopping Parade opposite the library to ask for a complete re-surfacing of the road after another pothole appeared.

Mr Crowther, who represents Hucclecote on Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Large potholes have appeared again in the car park at Hucclecote Parade.

“I contacted the owners of the shopping parade to ask them to carry out the repairs needed.

“I have also asked when the car park will be re-surfaced as previously promised.”

In May last year, The Citizen reported that pensioner Jenny Smith had complained about potholes in the road, saying it was only a matter of time before an accident was caused.

Her husband Haydn Smith said they had noticed the problem had happened again in the same place.

He said: “We certainly have noticed that the hole is back, of course in these weather conditions the road is even more cracked and disfigured than usual.

“It’s frustrating because it’s a private road, so it isn’t the council’s job to do anything about it.”

Speaking last year, Paul Sulma, managing agent for Havenridge Ltd which owns the shopping parade, said temporary repairs had been carried out on the potholes.

But he added more permanent repairs would cost tens of thousands of pounds.

He said: “It is all down to the cost of doing a more comprehensive resurfacing.

“I have put forward proposals to our tenants with costings in the past. They have all been a bit upset about the amount of money that needs to be spent on getting the car park and road resurfaced.

“I have had to slightly put the brakes on it a bit and look at a more phased approach.”

“We are only to aware that the car park at Hucclecote Parade is privately owned. The Owners of the shopping parade have been promising for nearly 2 years now to resurface the car park. In the meantime it deteriorates and can be dangerous to walk over.Several people have tripped over and hurt them selves, one elderly gentleman actually breaking his ankle. We do have a thriving shops at the Hucclecote Parade and we want that to continue, but it has to be safe for people to use. Not everyone who works at the shops feel the same as the shop owner who seems to be saying it is OK to let the car park continue to get worse. Following the publication of the artlicle when I went into one of the shops in the parade I was thanked for bringing this matter up. Almost every local resident I speak to about this issue feels this car park needs resurfacing. Finally we contacted the company that owned Glenville shopping Parade further up Hucclecote Road about the dangerous state of the paved area outside their shops. To their credit they responded and resurfacd the whole area . It is now a credit to them. We just want to see the same at Hucclecote Parade.”

“For the information of Bill Crowther and David Brown - This carpark is privately owned and the repairs are not paid for by the LandLords, but the Shop Owners. As a Shop Owner I can assure you that If we could affort the Car Park to be re-surfaced we would love for that to happen - BUT IN THE REAL WORLD AND THIS CURRENT CLIMATE - for our small shops to fork out for such an expense would wipe us out. So if you would like to see ALL the shops in this parade SHUT then Please keep campaining. However, I am sure that most people will understand that we wish to continue trading as long as we can and if that means a few pot holes to avoid then so be it. UNLESS OF COURSE THE COUNCIL WOULD CONSIDER PUTTING IN A CHEAP TENDER for re-surfacing and our LandLords see fit to meet the intial costs and spread it over the terms of our lease, then we may stand a chance.
    Shop Owner - Hucclecote Parade.”

“It's ironic that the councillors are complaining about the potholes, shouldn't they get their own sorted out first.”
