Investigations are continuing today after a police officer was knocked unconscious in the street.

He was attacked when he was trying to detain a man he had chased down a road in Gloucester on Wednesday.

The man punched the officer in the face several times and threw his bike at him, knocking him unconscious. He was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with concussion and discharged early yesterday morning.

Inspector Wendy Burford said: "This violent and unprovoked assault reinforces the risk our officers face on a daily basis. We know there were people in the area at the time who may have seen the person responsible or the assault itself and we would urge those people to come forward."

The offender is described as white, 5ft 8in tall, aged in his early 20s and with short brown hair. He was wearing grey jogging bottoms with a blue stripe and a black top. The incident happened in the Podsmead area of the city.

Gloucester city councillor Jennie Dallimore said she was shocked by the attack.

"I am absolutely outraged that this happened," she said. "It is disappointing that there is a minority who spoil it for everyone else. I hope the officer isn't that badly injured, and I really hope the police catch whoever was responsible."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident 709 of November 21. Alternatively, information can also be given anonymously on 0800 555 111, or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. In some cases Crimestoppers offer rewards of up to £1,000 where information leads to a conviction.

“@CROWDOG - you seem extremely bitter - it seems you were a child that always got his way and never went without, (possibly the reason your intelligence/wisdom is lacking some-what).

The police are here to protect the public and if you are a citizen of the UK that also includes yourself.
If this is an issue for you maybe you should look at removing yourself to a less democratic country and see if their force can look after you just as good ..”

"Two weeks ago...and it takes that long to get an e-fit out?

London, 11 year old girl seriously assulted yesterday - "An 11-year-old schoolgirl is in hospital after she was snatched off the street and raped when she got off the bus on the way home from school. "

"It doesn't need me to say how serious an attack this is," he added. "She's still in hospital and has had to have surgery for her injuries.

"Then she was dragged into a park and subjected to a brutal sex attack."

The victim who was dressed in her school uniform, is described as white and of petite frame. She has told police that the attack continued for two to three hours and officers say she has suffered serious injuries.

Police described the suspect as a black male with afro hair wearing a dark grey top and black baggy jeans.

They say the attack took place along one of Enfield's busiest shortcuts, at the beginning of Friday afternoon rush-hour

“Inspector Wendy Burford said: "This violent and unprovoked assault reinforces the risk our officers face on a daily basis" ..... What about all the public that get attacked on a daily basis? I got attacked once in Cheltenham, I also got a speeding fine a few months ago on a road that was a 40 and is now a 30. The police spent more time in proving I was the one driving than they did my assault!! It is digusting that a police officer gets attacked but no more so than anyone else M's Burford! Stop milking hard working tax payers and spend your publicly funded time stopping these people.”

“This may well be a consequence of the severe cuts to policing budgets. Single crewing puts officers at risk, with backup often some minutes away”

    “CrowDog
Just count your blessings you live in a country where the majority of the police are NOT armed!
In other places I can think of, the assailant/suspect would be on a cold slab or nursing a bullet wound!

Nonetheless the officer should have called for backup, I hope he recovers without further lasting injury.”
