Incinerator protesters take to Gloucester streets as fight goes on
CAMPAIGNERS against the Javelin Park incinerator took to the streets of Gloucester on Saturday.
The "monster" incinerator edged nearer reality this month when a contract was signed between Gloucestershire County Council and waste firm Urbaser Balfour Beatty.
A Liberal Democrat 'call-in' of the decision was thrown out days later. Despite the agreement, protesters says the development can still be stopped in its tracks as planning permission is yet to be granted.
Helen Michael, who lives in Hardwicke, is so incensed by the scheme, she hit the city centre to gather anti-incinerator signatures on a petition.

"I have never protested about anything before in my life," she said. " As it is on the outskirts, people think it won't effect them; but it'll affect all of us."
The council has said it is "satisfied" the process has been done properly.

“People believe that they can't make a difference...politicians don't listen to us poor taxpayers and just do whatever they want for their own vested interests (look at the expenses scandal) Wow, have you seen the size of this incinerator? Its huge. And right next to Blooms garden centre. Seems like smoke n'mirrors here from what I heard (forgive the pun). The decision process seems to have been a formality from the beginning (that's the impression anyway). From what I heard, the council own the land and have committed £500 million to this project over 25 years! If we have to have it, why not stick it next to Oldbury nuke plant? I find it amazing that the council would sign a contract for operation of the site before planning permission has been granted...and if permission is refused the council (i.e. us taxpayers) are liable to pay contractual damages. How is it that they can sign a contract before permission? As I live in Hardwicke, this is now the centre-piece of our village. The rest of Gloucester, Stroud or Cheltenham better check which way the wind is blowing as you'll also be breathing in the noxious fumes.”

“People need to wake up and get out of their docile states and take heed of such activities happening in their back garden. This incinerator puts profits over people and the environment. While we watch another episode of Eastenders, the powers that may be are taking away our health, and the health of generations that will proceed us. As people of conciousness, we need to take a stand against such things.”

“But not too late to question the County Council's iffy procedure, especially the bit where it's asking itself for permission to let it's very own choice of contractor build the burner.
Guess what the answer will be?”
