India House pub in Barton to be turned into convenience store
DESPITE a 1,200-name petition opposing the move, plans for a new shop in Barton have been approved.
Controversial proposals to demolish the former India House pub in Barton Street, which closed in February last year, and build a convenience store in its place were approved by Gloucester City Council's planning committee on Tuesday night.

The plans attracted huge interest from the community who feared a new shop on the site would draw trade from the independent shops in Barton Street, while safety concerns was also a hot topic. It is not yet known which retailer will take on the site.
Gloucester city councillor Saj Patel (Con. Barton and Tredworth) spoke at the meeting to represent the community.

He said: "Local people have taken huge risks in starting up their own businesses in Barton, and there is overwhelming anger and opposition against these plans. Parking is a serious problem throughout the ward. It is at an optimum level already, without the addition of a supermarket."
Meanwhile David Sergeant, of Barton and Tredworth Developments Ltd, also spoke at the meeting.
He said: "The report suggests the new shop would act as an "anchor convenience store" generating linked benefits for existing shops. The reality is that some existing shops will certainly slip their moorings and close down."
Councillor Usman Bhaimia (Lab. Barton and Tredworth) said: "That junction is extremely dangerous, you can't see up or down the road when you are trying to cross.
"There are also a number of schools in the areas, so a lot of children around."
Despite this the plans were approved, subject to the developers confirming they have done adequate research on pedestrian safety.

“A redundant derelict property, being redeveloped into a high quality store on Barton Street, hip hip hooray! Jobs in construction, jobs in retail and a reason to pump footfall on Barton Street, this is a win win regeneration proposal on a key redevelopment site, and represents the largest investment on Barton street in a decade!”

“Perhaps we should focus on the public houses that are still in business, and try to keep them that way? The Plough Inn is on the other end of St. James' Street, isn't it?

“Great news - it should raise the standard of the existing scruffy newsagents + convienence stores in and around Barton. Quite simply people have moved on from being happy with these corner shops because of their long opening hours, NOW there will be high standards, long opening hours and great low prices, clubcard points too if it's Tesco Express or Nectar points if it's a Sainsbury's Local.
Example from today's shopping at Tesco:
4 pack Nestle KitKat Chunky chocolate bars or 4 pack Nestle 'Toffee Crisp' for £1.45 and buy one get one free = so a unit price of 18p each.
How much are these each at the existing corner shops? 48p to 55p each that's how much.
I know where i'll be going.”

“The Welsh Harp on London Road is now a Tesco Express. Gloucester is losing its character and its history as the chain stores and bookmakers take over.”

“There are, by my reckoning, eight Conservative councillors on the planning committee, three from Labour and three Lib Dems, so if the report by someone who attended is correct, two councillors from the last two groups supported the decision, assuming the Tories all backed it. This information isn't confidential, so why can't we be told?

“Disgusting decision. 1,200 objections from residents discounted. Tesco gets its way again.
Meanwhile before that the City's football club had a petiton of a few thousand signatures in support and hundreds of letters of support, and the application was not approved.
Total farce. Brown envelope anyone?”
