Injury to insult as Pupils lose in a Drybrook double
Drybrook 38 Chosen Hill FP 7
WELL-drilled Drybrook claimed the spoils in a league and cup double header against Chosen Hill.
The Mannings Ground clash doubled up as a Western Counties North and Gloucestershire Intermediate Cup clash.
Drybrook opened the scoring after just four minutes as Kristian Taft made a break and Dan Cox was sent clear to touch down under the posts. Ollie Clements added the simple conversion.
A further blow came for the Pupils with Chosen full-back Ashley Lewis shown a yellow card for a disputed tackle in the build up.
Minutes later the Drybrook pack took control at a lineout five metres out and captain Simon Rugman drove over for a second converted try, but then came the first of Chosen's serious injuries.
Winger Nick Tribe suffered a dislocated knee at a ruck and while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, play was transferred onto the adjacent pitch.
With Mitch Renton, Marcus Cowles and Dale Critchley at the heart of a dominant Drybrook forward pack ChosenHill were forced to defend for long periods.
Drybrook number eight Lee Ward looked set to score when he broke unchallenged from a maul, but a tremendous cover tackle from winger Dan Wilcox somehow saved the day.
Drybrook were not to be denied at the next opportunity and scrum-half Mitch Baldwin was accredited with the try after being driven over the line under a pile of players.
Clements' successful conversion further increased Drybrook's lead and the home side were soon on the attack again when a delightful move involving Tom Treherne and Marcus Cowles was just halted in the corner.
Just before the break Drybrook grabbed the bonus point try when industrious prop Jun Sing Lee broke free on the 22 metre line before racing clear and Clements added the extras with another fine kick.
The second half was much more even with Chosen bagging a converted try from winger Dan Robinson to give them hope.
But the Pupils then suffered their second serious injury as centre Ed Higgs went down with a neck injury that required the attention of another ambulance crew.
So play was transferred back to the original pitch and Rugman raced clear of a tiring defence to score the fifth Drybrook try, one he celebrated with a spectacular dive.
Clements converted but less than a minute later Drybrook's Ben Large was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle.
Chosen Hill took advantage of their extra man to add a consolation try as Wilcox was set free on the overlap to score. Ashley Lewis added the conversion to complete the scoring.
