Its current night service provides nursing care for severely disabled children so their parents can have a rare evening off.

Many of the parents it helps are sleep deprived as they have never had a night away from their children.

The trust wants to help by extending its base at Kite's Corner, in Barnwood, with a purpose-built bedroom facility to allow children to sleep there with round-the-clock care.

The trust has been providing free nursing support for young children across Gloucestershire since 1989.

It was set up by Vance and Heather Hopkins in memory of their son James who was born with a rare neuro-muscular disease and died aged just 20 months.

It has helped more than 350 children so far and provided 200,000 respite hours but now it needs our readers' help to increase the care they offer.

A trial overnight service in a converted lounge has seen it booked up 15 weeks in advance and Vance said families are "crying out" for the support.

It is aiming to raise an extra £500,000 by its 25th anniversary on September 17, 2014, to create the four-bed overnight extension and fund the service for two years.

And The Citizen is asking readers not just to donate cash but also to get fundraising for the charity to help.

Vance said: "It's a tough target but it's essential to give the families the service they are asking for.

"We wouldn't be here without the support for the community and we can't do this without them either.

"Whether you are an individual or company we want to you to get involved."
