Julian Alsop's weekly take on the sporting world:

HI-DE-HI readers, hope you are all well. I suppose you are wondering why I’ve turned into a 1970s sitcom?

Let me explain. I was on a stag do last weekend and a number of us were all tasting the local San Miguel in freezing Benidorm when we bumped into Paul Shane, Ted from the hit TV show Hi De Hi.

Paul was an absolute legend and agreed to have a beer or two with us (see picture right).

The best man crashed and burned on the first night and was last seen heading to the airport two-days ahead of schedule.

Craig James, hope you made it home okay.

This left Gerald and Polish to fight it out for the back-up best man’s job.

Boys, I can’t decide on a winner. You were both fantastic, and everyone involved should give themselves a pat on the back – we made it back!

DON'T EXAGGERATE WHAT SKIPPER DOES

WHO gives a hoot who the next England captain is?

I mean, you don’t need a degree to walk to the centre circle, shake the hands of the officials and opponents, say heads or tails then tell the rest of the lads it’s theirs or our kick-off!

It’s not like cricket where you need to make changes in how you bowl or changing fielding positions or even rugby.

I might be wrong but in rugby it’s only the captain who is allowed to approach the referee as he is held responsible for the whole team discipline.

That reminds me, is Fabio Capello moonlighting for the England rugby team?

They were shocking against Scotland and I feel Scotland were hard done by and at least deserved the draw.

Going back to England football, what is wrong is how the manager and the FA have handled this.

Mind you, the last few major tournaments have been surrounded in controversy and the media and ex-players have been having a field day again putting their boring views across.

I'M SURE EVANS WILL HAVE BEEN IN FULL SWING

WITH the big freeze putting paid to Cheltenham's game against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, it must have given Scott Brown a chance to do a little trip to his favourite market stall.

Tuesday’s game against Crawley went ahead and it looks as though the boys had their backsides slapped.

I imagine that Steve Evans (above) would have been in full swing after that result put Crawley back to the top of the league.

What is important now is for the lads to dust themselves down for the game against local rivals Hereford and get at least a point on their travels to get the promotion charge back on track.

Next week I am hosting another Soccer Camp at the All Saints Academy from February 13-17 between 9.30am-3.30pm.

Our lead coaches are ex-professionals who have played a minimum of 100 Football League games.

This is our third holiday camp and we have already placed four players at League clubs so it is doing really well.

There are still places available should you wish to send your child along. The cost is £10 per day and you can do as many days as you like.

GET ON BOARD NOW TO SUPPORT BUCKO

THE big freeze hit almost all the lower League and non-League games over the past weekend, so I have no games to report on or players to incriminate!

However, Gerald emailed me from his park bench to tell me that he’s on Pete Buxton’s – the Gloucester Rugby legend – celebration year committee.

He told me that he is helping to organise an exclusive evening on Wednesday, February 22 in the 1873 suite at Kingsholm with a number of famous faces.

Big Pete will be there along with Mike Tindall, Dean Ryan, Andy Deacon, Andy Hazell and Bryan Redpath. Tickets are for a minimum donation of £20.

It’s sure to be a great evening for a great player who has given so much great service to his local club so get yourself there.
