AN argument at Stroud College Ball left a student's face permanently scarred after she was injured by a glass.

Katherine Martin admitted causing the injuries to Leanne Hudson at the end of term party.

Gloucester Crown Court heard the 21-year-old, of Market Street in Nailsworth, lashed out with the glass in her hand.

Prosecutor Mary Cowe told the court there were several witnesses to the incident in the toilet, but each had a different account of what had happened on June 29.

She said some accounts said the girls had to be pushed apart following a confrontation, while others said it came out of the blue.

Ms Cowe told the court: "The complainant said she had considered not going to the ball because of the defendant's actions in the past. At around 10.15pm they were both in the toilets, but there is no suggestion the defendant went looking for her.

"The complainant describes her lunging towards her face and then she felt blood running down her face. When the defendant was interviewed she said it was an accident. She said she felt panicked and accepts causing the injury, but doesn't know how it has come about."

Martin, who fled the toilets after Miss Hudson was injured, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.

Miss Hudson was left with a one-and-a-half inch cut on her left cheek that needed six stitches and a similar sized cut to her chin, which was not as deep. The scar is still visible and the prosecutor said Miss Hudson still felt intimidated.

Defending, Giles Nelson said: "She has very loving parents and educationally this lady has struggled. She has been very anxious about these proceedings and it is very difficult for her to deal with."

Judge Jamie Tabor told Martin, who works in a charity shop, he had previously seen catastrophic consequences of glassings.

He said: "I accept you lashed out while carrying a glass in your hand. This was a reckless and mindless action."

Martin was given a nine month sentence suspended for two years with a three month curfew from 8pm to 6am. She was ordered to pay £1,000 compensation in two months and £500 costs.

“Absolutely love how they have missed out the part where she then went out of the toilets on to attack another innocent girl who was outside, ripping out her hair and leaving blood and scratches all over her face and body and the girl on the floor! oh and also love how they have made her out to be the victim guessing they decided not to take on board the fact that she's banned from most pubs in Swindon and on pub watch for glassing an owner in the face oh and also for glassing a random man in the face after he looked at her friend in the wrong way LOL oh and I ALMOST forgot how much this has taught her a lesson after she's been showing her tag off LOL! And people wonder why the justice system is ****** up! But gotta remember she comes from a loving family so guess all this is alright yeah? Brilliant.”

    “More Lunacy...

Jezzamine Taylor, 18, warned by judge to stay out of trouble or face long prison sentence"

"If you get into further trouble you will end up going to prison for quite a long time and I suspect you will be sitting in your cell wishing you had done something different."

'Tough talk' there by Judge Hart - but no action because he "suspects" she'll go to jail - pathetic.

“If you lunge out to hit someone, presumably you either make up your mind that you are going to slap them (open handed) or punch them (closed fist).

Either way, you are going to realise that you are holding a glass and stop because of that.

This woman didn't - she carried on with the attack. I find it hard to believe that this was anything other than a premeditated attack on someone that she had a history of bullying.”

“I have made "no excuses" for the actions - I merely answered CaptCX when he questionned why someone might take a glass with them when visiting the toilets with some sensible possible reasons - including one that is recommended by many groups - including the police - here, for example - http://tinyurl.com/cya5tnn

I then pointed out that the prosecution in this case had specifically stated that the defendant had not gone into the toilets with the intention of attacking or fighting - so it's hard say for certain that someone holding a glass - in a bar where everyone is also holding glasses and bottles - would be doing so with the deliberate intention of using it as a weapon when they were not planning on attacking someone.

Unfortunately, some people around here regard anything that doesn't agree with their narrow-minded chance to point fingers and scream about how bad other people are as some sort of personal offence. If you bothered reading my posts, you'll find that I made NO comment about this specific case except to quote the prosecuters comments. I did not defend her - at all - I merely answered a couple of points”

“I have/had very loving parents, and struggled educationally due to being a right dilly daydream with my head in the clouds. But I never glassed anyone because of it, probably because I do not have a nasty temper. So why that should be used as an excuse for Katherine Martins downright vicious behaviour I'll never know. It seems that the girl she attacked already felt intimidated by her, so a bit of a bully by the sound of it. Pity the sentence was suspended, a few months in clink may have given time to reflect on what an unpleasant person she is. But instead I expect she feels quite smug to have got away with it, another lesson NOT learned.”

“I don't belieeeeeeeeve it! A young woman gets glassed, potentially scarred for life, and there are people on here making excuses for her attacker's actions! Just imagine if it were YOUR girlfriend, sister or daughter. Took her drink into the toilets in case it got spiked – pull the other one! I doubt whether even her council had the front to use that one!”

“PengiPete - You can harp on all you like with your 'take your glass of drink everywhere with you just in case' theory. I think we all know that this was a premeditated attack by a nasty piece of work who had already shown aggressive behaviour to the victim in the past.”

“Well maybe you're right PengiPete - However, given that the victim was worried about going to the event in the first place because she knew that Katherine Martin, who had been threatening to her in the past, was going to be there and then the self same Katherine Martin glasses her.............well let's just say I don't think that this was a coincidence.

    Maybe I'm just a cynic.”

“I'm not sure that TiG are trying to say that they are presenting a full and complete synopsis of the evidence and I'm not sure that "I was splashed with two ounces of lager" would be regarded as worth mentioning in a story about a lass being scarred by the broken glass.

The report doesn't say that the glass was empty. Sure, you can make that assumption but it is only that - an assumption. Even if it was empty at the time of the blow, that wouldn't prove that she took the glass with her to use as a weapon - she could have spilled the contents whislt in the toilet or finished the last drop whilst she was in there - or she may just have hung onto it with the intention of getting it refilled - maybe the bar had run low on glasses and she thought it would help her get served more quickly or maybe she was just drunk and not thinking that logically.

None of those involve any malicious intent and even the prosecutor made a point of saying that "there is no suggestion the defendant went looking for..." (the victim) - which hardly seems to support the idea that she had armed herself in advance.

People really do throw slaps and punches without first putting down whatever they are carrying. It's just a sad fact of life that people tend to throw punches when they're drunk and that means they are more likely to have something dangerous in their hand at exactly the same time that they are less capable of recognising the risks.”

“............In which case, wouldn't the victim have been hit in the face first by the contents of the guilty party's glass, followed by the glass itself?

From what has been reported, it sounds as if the glass was essentially empty - meaning that the most likely reason it was taken into the toilet was as a weapon.”
