LANDLORDS are shaping up in apple pie fashion for a United States run.

Hugh Kelly and Charlie Pettigrew, from the Hollow Bottom at Guiting Power, will tackle the New York Marathon on November 7.

The determined duo aim to raise £6,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and are hosting an American-style, 60s-themed three-course dinner to make the final push towards their target.

Punters will be fattened up with transatlantic tucker including barbecue wings, burgers, New York cheesecake and Manhattan cocktails on arrival.

But Hugh, 42, and Charlie, 45, may dodge the stodge. Hugh said: "We haven't lost any weight since we started training in mid-July.

"We wanted to do a marathon to get fit and lose a bit of middle-aged spread yet our training has stuttered with lots of injuries.

"But we'll make it as it's to support our charity.

"Charlie's dad Jimmy died of cancer last year, aged 72, and he saw how fantastic the Macmillan Nurses were, and I lost my mum when I was four-and-a-half."

The pals have already completed two half-marathons in London and Bristol and are in Cardiff tomorrow.

The dinner will also feature entertainment, dancing and a silent auction, coordinated by enterprising bar worker Katie Whitnall, who has gained 30 prizes from businesses and individuals.

They include a trip to the gallops and breakfast at the Hollow Bottom, from top trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, a framed picture of Grand National winner Don't Push It from Jonjo O'Neil and a stables tour and breakfast from top trainer Kim Bailey. Other lots include a hamper from Mickleton butcher David Moore.

The event starts at 7pm for 7.30pm, with £15 ticket proceeds all going to the charity.
