However, it was the Robins who broke the deadlock in the closing stages of the first half when Jax Haines seized upon a loose pass and found Ade Blair down the right hand side.
The speedy forward cut inside the full back before firing a low cross to the back post where Charlie Griffin was on hand to stoke the ball home for the visiting team.
Cheltenham continued to play some composed passing football leaving the Downend players chasing shadows.
The second half brought an improvement from Downend as they searched for an equalising goal.
Cheltenham's rearguard looked as though they would hold on, but the pressure finally paid off for Downend, when a deflected shot found its way into the goal with just a few minutes remaining.
Robins boss Ian Hutton was pleased with his side's efforts, but disappointed to leave with just a point.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game today," he said.
"Downend have been going very well this season. To concede a goal late on like that is always hard to take.
"But credit to the players, they're playing with confidence and some of the football on display is very good to watch."
