WHEN your get a beautiful evening it seems a shame not to make the most of it. So, on a whim, we headed off to The Old Crown in Uley.

Like so many of our villages, it is stunningly pretty yet never on the tourist trail.

And the pub is similar. It might be in a picturesque village but The Old Crown remains a traditional country pub which is clearly popular with its own local crowd.

The menu offers affordable straightforward fare, with jacket potatoes from £6.45, rather than a fine-dining experience. That suited us perfectly. We were simply happy not to cook and enjoy the sunny evening.

There are a few tables out the front but we preferred to sit away from the road in the garden at the back with our two children.

The Old Crown has a home-from-home feel. Someone had clearly been tending the garden recently, which was looking pretty and, thoughtfully, had been well-fenced, enabling us to relax (a little).

A box of children's toys and books was also a nice touch and our little ones played while we enjoyed the real ales, which include Pig's Ear and Uley Bitter from nearby Uley Brewery.

I enjoyed my Old Crown braising steak and Uley Ale pie served with chips and salad (£8.95). While it wasn't anything fancy, the pie was full of chunks of beef in rich gravy and the side salad was generous.

My companion had the breaded plaice with chips and peas for £8.45. It was also fine, although he would have liked a few more chips.

The children's sausage, chips and peas meal (£3.95) kept them happy.

The staff at The Old Crown were friendly and the service was relaxed.

We walked off our meals with a leisurely evening stroll around Uley's churchyard, thinking how lucky we are to have so many unsung beauty spots on our doorstep.
