Chris Coleman has trounced the opposition in his bid to be a Springbank councillor in Cheltenham

The Liberal Democrat candidate got 722 votes in the political contest which saw residents turn out to polling stations last night.

The by-election was held to fill the vacancy in Cheltenham Borough Council left by the death of John Morris earlier this year.

Labour candidate Clive Harriss got 142 votes and Tory hope Mireille Weller received 188.

Jon Stubbings, for The Green Party, attracted 35 votes.

Chris Coleman, stood in May's General Election as a Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for the Forest of Dean.

“Danny, Woodmancote. If the LibDems are still with the Tories at the next election, they will be wiped off the political map. Particularly as the Tories are rapidly turning back into the nasty party. In fact the way they are going, they will make the last Tory government look like a bunch of left wing liberals.”

“Well done, great news for the Lib Dems.

I wouldn't be so sure Quasi and Matt H, elections are strange things. One of the things that I will be looking at in 5 years is what the Lib Dems have managed to change and what wouldn't have changed if we had a minority Conservative government.”
