THE race is on to find Gloucestershire's first Police Commissioner after the Liberal Democrats threw their candidate's name into the hat.

Alistair Cameron (pictured) will fight the election on November 15.

Mr Cameron, who has represented Hester's Way for 12 years on Cheltenham Borough Council, said: "The police carry out a demanding and, at times, dangerous job. I will work hard towards ensuring they have the resources to do their work. Although crime has been generally going down in Gloucestershire, it has gone up in some areas such as burglary and thefts from motor vehicles. These areas need tackling."

“Someone's on my case now. Last post was deleted in less than 3 seconds! It's a shame TIS is so unsure of it's journalistic integrity that it has to adopt Stasi style tactics to smother debate.

    Love and peace”

    “Coingrass

I would argue the opposite. Political parties exist to get elected and re-elected. Therefore they can't afford to have a candidate who abuses their position otherwise they won't be re-elected and indeed this may spill over to national elections. Always will be safer to vote for a mainstream party than an independent candidate who may not care about being re-elected.”

“Even though they aren't MPs, a political candidate who gets the job is going to be in a difficult position if local citizens want him/her to pursue a policy that is contrary to that of his/her party's policy. Once voted in, they will have four years to say one thing and do another. These are not political appointments and I believe every political candidate should be required to swear an oath that they will take no instruction, direction, advice or guidance from their political party. An independent candidate, however, should be free of political bias or interference.”
