France coach Marc Lievremont has launched an astonishing attack on his own players after they ignored his requests to stay in after their 9-8 World Cup semi-final win over Wales on Saturday.

Lievremont, who will step down after Sunday’s final at Eden Park on Sunday against hosts New Zealand, is anxious his players don’t make the same mistake he did in 1999 before facing Australia in the final.

The former Les Bleus flanker was part of the side that shocked New Zealand in the semi-final but exuberant celebrations cost them against the Wallabies according to the Lievremont.

“I told them they are a bunch of spoiled brats,” said Lievremont. “Undisciplined, disobedient, sometimes selfish. Always complaining, always moaning. It has been like this for four years.

“In 1999 we spent four days celebrating our semi-final win. We didn't prepare properly and I don't want us to relive this same thing.

“The problem is, we are not world champions yet, we’re only in the final.”

However Lievremont also tried to claim the effects of the night won’t have too much bearing on the match, which is a rerun of the 1987 final.

He added: “I also told them I have a lot of affection for them. We are in the final but it is a shame they don't look after themselves.

“It is not a few cigarettes, the two or three beers or the extra dessert they eat that will affect their preparation for the final.”
