The headline news was the opening of a new AA road service station at Elmbridge. This was the most up-to-date facility of its kind in the South West, replacing the service point in Highnam. The old building was destined for the AA museum in Basingstoke.

Sir Keith Joseph proposed a review of the benefit system in his speech to the Conservative Party Conference. In Gloucester, the campaign to save the city's Grammar Schools was set to continue despite the council's comprehensive education policy.

In sport, fitness problems and international duty combined to cause problems for Gloucester's rugby selectors as the team prepared to meet Harlequins. While the horse trials at Cirencester Park had not one but two royal spectators as both Princess Anne and Princess Caroline of Monaco attended.
