Lightspeed shuts with loss of 125 jobs
A MODULAR building manufacturers in Stroud has closed with the loss of all 125 jobs.
The firm Lightspeed took over from former makers of student and key worker accommodation pods Unite only about three months ago.
Workers at the factory on the Stroudwater Business Park off Oldends Lane in Stonehouse were told the grim news on Monday. (oct 8)
Administrators said Lightspeed had run out of cash, ceased trading and sent the workforce home.

“Responding to your report on Lightspeed factory closure. Whilst the article is reasonably accurate it fails to detail the true story of corporate incompetence and greed from the Unite Group an FTSE250 company. Joe Lister the Chief Financial Officer of Unite Group brokered a deal to hand control of the business to two 'dodgy' business men and gave them £800,000.00 that was destined to pay the staff a reasonable redundancy package. Mr Lister reported several times to the Staff association that the Unite Group had completed the relevant due diligence and was confident that their claims were accurate and that they had funding to take the business forward and against the advice of the UNITE Modular board and business managers completed the transfer of the business. Reports have filtered back into the management team that Ian Heard of Lightspeed has a criminal record for breaking environmental laws in Canada and may still be facing prosecution. Well done to the board at UNITE for allowing such an unscrupulous character to take control of the of a business with 140 ex UNITE employees. The losers in this debacle are the UNITE employees in Stonehouse who have lost their UNITE redundancy package and the government who will now pay a reduced package to all the employees employees. Redundancy is not something that should be taken lightly by any company and the UNITE board have with this in a despicable and spiteful manner. They should be ashamed of their actions and to safeguard the reputation of their business pay the redundancy package they agreed in June with the staff association and employees at Unite Modular Solutions.
Please use this piece and investigate the sequence of events leading to this corporate sham and report on the truth behind today's report.”
