"ROGER Beaujolais would frighten any jazz vibes virtuoso, either side of the Atlantic."

Those words, spoken by jazz immortal Gary Burton, set the seal on the career of the star set for Cheltenham's Victory Club tomorrow night.

"We changed people's perceptions. We made it possible to have fun and listen to jazz," he said.

These days Roger's commitment to entertainment remains undimmed. When those eight mallets start flying, feet start tapping, and when he gets into a moody ballad, all that chiming mysticism does eerie things to the heartstrings.

Tomorrow, three of London's best complete the quartet: pianist Robin Aspland; bassist Simon Thorpe and drummer Winston Clifford.

Tickets cost £11. Derek Briggs
