PUPILS in Longlevens were transported back in time to learn how the Victorians lived.

Longlevens Infant School, in Paygrove Lane, held a Victorian wash day for pupils to learn about how people kept clean more than a century ago.

Teacher Sue Halas said: "Our topic this term is houses and homes, with an emphasis on history.

"We believe children will learn more comprehensively if they take part in interactive experiences, so we held a Victorian wash day."

The event was organised by a company called Living Past Times, which brought along its own equipment.

Mrs Halas added: "The children had hands-on experience of grating soap flakes, using a dolly and washboard, using a small mangle and ironing the linen.

"Both children and staff dressed up in Victorian costume, too, to add an authentic atmosphere to the day."
