She lived opposite and would often stand outside her home admiring the soldiers as they passed by. One day it was love at the garden gate.

They married in 1947 at St Aldate Church Hall in Reservoir Road – not the church that stands there at present, which was built in 1964, but instead the timber building which stands behind it.

It was put up in 1928 as a temporary church and is still used today as a village hall.

After a short stay in Plymouth the pair returned to Gloucester and had seven children – Bill, Michael, Dave, John, Paul, Peter and Sue.

Their son Bill said: "Apparently the word around the neighbourhood was that every time Bert took his trousers off Mary became pregnant.

"Meal times in the Loveys household were interesting to say the least with the family eating their way through 56lbs of potatoes each week and drinking six pints of milk a day."

They now have 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

They are celebrating their anniversary with a party at Blackfriars Priory with Vince Freeman, who was a contestant in the hit BBC series The Voice appearing.
