Loyal customers back new garage bid
CUSTOMERS have pledged their support for the owner of a Cotswold garage in his bid to relocate the business.
Robin Smith, who runs Arlington Garage in Cirencester Road, Fairford, has been given notice to leave his current premises and is hoping to move to a unit at Horcott Industrial Estate.
The move, which would require change of use at the proposed site, has been recommended for refusal by planning officers who say it would generate too much noise for residents living nearby.
Mr Smith, who has run Arlington Garage for the past 11 years, said: "We enjoy really good support from our regular customers. I hope councillors will recognise our argument and approve the application.
"It's quite a nerve-wracking time. We've got three full-time staff and two part-time staff so our jobs are on the line. I don't know what we will do if it is turned down.
"Garages are not as noisy as they used to be and we are prepared to update our equipment to lessen the impact on residents."
More than 60 people have written letters in support of the application, saying the garage would be a positive addition to the area.
One letter reads: "It would be a great loss if this local garage was to no longer be in Fairford."
"It is valuable to our community to have a car servicing and repair business in the town. A move to Horcott would mean this benefit is retained."
Another person added the applicant does a 'very good job' in training his apprentices.
"This is important in maintaining the local reservoir of skills and giving opportunities to young people to stay and work here."
The garage would be used for car servicing and MOT testing between 8am and 6pm from Monday to Friday and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. The majority of units in the industrial estate are currently used for light industry and office space, but change of use is needed to include the garage, which falls under "general industry".
In her report case officer Helen Donnelly noted there was potential for noise from banging metal and 'screeching' power tools.
She said: "Officers are sympathetic with the applicant's situation and are mindful that there has been a considerable amount of support.
"However, the proposed change of use of this unit to would result in increased noise disturbance in the locality which would have a detrimental effect on residents nearby."
